The Release operation is used to release control of a domain name that is currently on your tag to another tag holder.

Guidelines

  • You can only release domains that are on your tag to another tag.  If you attempt to release a domain that is not on your tag then that may be considered abuse of the Automaton.
  • There is no equivalent operation that allows you to take control of a domain from another tag holder.
  • If the domain name is the only one on its account then the account will be moved to the new tag.
  • If there are other domain names on the account then the domain name will be moved to a different account on the new tag. If you provide an account-id then this account will be used otherwise a new account with the same details will be created on the new tag.
  • If you wish to release all the domain names on an account (and have the account move with them) then use the bulk automaton.
  • If the new tag requires a handshake before accepting the domain name, then you will be informed of this. You will be informed of the success or failure of the release by email.
  • A release cannot be revoked.

Instructions

  • Send to the address applications@nic.uk.
  • Use a subject line of TAG Release (replace TAG with your tag name in capital letters)
  • Use the template below to specify the domain you wish to release and the new tag you wish to release it to
  • You can specify up to 100 domain names in one message by separating each set of fields with a blank line
  • Make sure the email is PGP-signed with a registered PGP key.

Operation template

The following template is used:
operation: release
key:
registrar-tag:
account-id:

Notes

  1. The 'key' must specify a domain name on your tag.
  2. The 'registrar-tag' is that tag name of the registrar to whom you wish to release control of this domain name.
  3. To detag a domain name the 'registrar-tag' value needs to be 'DETAGGED'.
  4. The account-id is an optional field representing the account on the new tag, if known, to which the domain name is to be moved. If the domain name is the only one on it's current account then this field is ignored as the account itself is moved to the new tag with the domain name.

Reply template

The reply template is the same as that for a Modify operation, though with a different subject line

Subject: Re: ACK TEST release - handshake generated

The following message was sent from the Automaton:

Your request for a registrar change has resulted in a handshake
request to the receiving tag. The receiving tag has up to 5 days to respond, after
which the request will be expired. You will be notified of the success or
failure of the registrar change by email.

If you have any questions please contact support@nominet.org.uk.

Errors

After processing your operation the Automaton produces and sends an automated reply.  If there is a problem with the operation then two different error condition may occur
