What is detagging?
From time to time, you may ask us to remove your tag from a domain name registration to indicate a permanent end to your relationship with the registrant.  You do this by releasing the domain to a special tag called DETAGGED.

A registrar cannot retag a domain once it has been detagged.  After the domain has been detagged only the registrant can retag it by using our chargeable online service.

What happens when a domain name is detagged?
When a domain name is detagged, the name servers associated with the domain name are removed.  This means that all services previously associated with the domain name, for example web site hosting and email forwarding, will cease to operate.  Once a domain name has been detagged, we assume that the registrar no longer has the registrant's authority to act as its agent for the domain name.

Can I register a domain name that is marked as DETAGGED?
A detagged domain name is still registered to the original registrant, and it remains as such until either the current registrant renews it or it is cancelled.  After cancellation it immediately becomes available for registration on a first-come, first-served basis.

When should I detag a domain name?
You should only detag a domain name to indicate a permanent cessation of your relationship with the registrant.  Under our renewals system it is not necessary to detag a domain name to indicate that you do not want to renew it.  Only those domain names that you renew will appear on your monthly renewals invoice.

How do I detag a domain name?
Before you detag a domain name, you should ensure that we have the correct name, address and contact details for the registrant so that we may deal with them directly where needed.

To detag a domain name using the Automaton, you should use the RELEASE operation and set the 'registrar-tag' field to specify DETAGGED as the new registrar tag.

To detag a domain name using EPP,you should use the <epp:transfer> element and set the <domain:registrar-tag> element to DETAGGED.

What happens to detagged domain names?
After a domain name has been detagged, it will exist in our register database until it becomes due for renewal.  We will then contact the registrant in order to find out whether or not they wish to renew the domain name.  If the registrant does wish to renew the domain name, they will need to move to a new provider - this is known as a retag or registrar transfer.

How soon does a detagged domain name become available for registration?

We make every effort to contact the registrant to ask their permission to cancel the registration.  The speed of this process depends on the accuracy of the information in the register.  Once we have contacted the registrant and confirmed that they no longer require the domain name, the registration will be suspended after 30 days and then cancelled 60 days later.

What happens if I detag a domain name by mistake?
If you have detagged a domain name by mistake, we will only accept a retag request from the domain name registrant.  Please note this request will be treated as a registrar transfer.  The registrant will need to log into their account in our online service, select the registrar change service and pay the transfer fee.

Is it necessary to complete the surrender form after detagging?
If we have not received a completed surrender form from the registrant, we will try to collect the renewal fee for a detagged domain name when it is due for renewal.  Our process ensures that a detagged domain name will be cancelled 90 days after expiry if the renewal fee remains outstanding.  This is a lengthy process and, if the registrar has already established that the registrant no longer wishes to maintain the domain name, can be unnecessary.  It is therefore more sensible for the registrant to surrender the domain name so that it is available for registration by someone else.

How can my customer surrender a domain name?
Details of how to complete a surrender form are available.

How do I move a domain name that is detagged onto a new tag?
To retag a domain name that is currently marked as DETAGGED, the legal registrant must complete the registrar transfer (tag change) through their account in our online services.  We will charge the registrant £10 plus VAT for using this service.  We will retag the domain name in accordance with the registrant's request and the registrar change option set on the registrar's account.

What happens if there are any outstanding debts on a domain name that is retagged?
If there are any outstanding fees on a domain name that is retagged, the registrant can pay these fees directly to us at our non-member rate of £80 plus VAT.  Alternatively the registrant can ask their new registrar to pay the outstanding renewal fees.  When the domain name is retagged, the new registrar should submit a renewal request and the fees would be included in the next renewals invoice.
